Georges Coudray: A Statesman of Social Housing

Early Life and Education

Georges Coudray was born on June 2, 1902, in Evran, Côtes-d'Armor, France. The son of a craftsman, he pursued a career in healthcare, graduating from the University of Nancy as a pharmacist and dentist.

Political Beginnings

In October 1945, Coudray was elected to the Constituent Assembly for Ille-et-Vilaine, representing the People's Republican Movement (MRP). He became an advocate for war victims, ensuring their compensation and the repayment of their debts.

Advocate for Social Housing

During his tenure in the Constituent Assembly, Coudray focused on addressing the housing crisis sparked by World War II. He drew inspiration from Britain's housing policies, advocating for rent controls, construction subsidies, and the creation of a social housing system.

Parliamentary Service and Legacy

In 1946, Coudray was re-elected to the National Constituent Assembly. He played a crucial role in nationalizing the Vichy laws and restoring the principles of the Third Republic. As a member of the Shipping Commission, he defended the interests of French fishermen.

Later Career and Death

From 1955 to 1998, Coudray served as Mayor of Paramé. He also held the position of Cantonal Councilor for Dinard from 1958 until his death on January 10, 1998. Georges Coudray's tireless efforts laid the foundation for France's comprehensive social housing system, leaving a lasting legacy of compassion and social justice.
