Maris Verpakovskis

Maris Verpakovskis was born in Liepaja, Latvia, where his father, Ilmar, coached him in his hometown team. Verpakovskis made his professional debut in Liepaja in 2000.
Club Career
In 2001, Verpakovskis joined Latvian powerhouse Skonto FC. After a successful spell there, he signed for Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv in 2003.
Verpakovskis struggled to find success at Dynamo and was loaned out to Getafe (2006-07) and Hajduk Split (2007-08). Upon returning to Kyiv, he was loaned again, this time to Celta Vigo in Spain.
Despite his lack of playing time, Dynamo Kyiv extended Verpakovskis' contract until 2012. However, he was later loaned to Ergotelis in Greece (2009-11) and Baku in Azerbaijan (2011-12).
Return to Latvia
In 2014, Verpakovskis became the manager of newly founded Latvian club FK Liepaja. He announced his retirement from playing shortly after and capped his international career with a brief appearance in a Baltic Cup semi-final in 2015.
Verpakovskis retired in 2015, returning to his hometown club FK Liepaja to end his career where it began.
International Career
Verpakovskis is Latvia's all-time top scorer with 29 goals. He scored Latvia's only goal in a major international tournament, netting against the Czech Republic at Euro 2004.
Legacy
Verpakovskis is considered one of Latvia's greatest footballers. His international goalscoring record and his role in Latvia's historic qualification for Euro 2004 have cemented his place in Latvian football history.
