Polish General, Public Figure, and Adventurer

Brig. Gen. Konstanty Zarębski was a multifaceted Polish figure who served as a general in the Polish Army, a public activist, a photographer, painter, poet, prose writer, sailor, navigator, traveler, mountaineer, and mountain rescuer.

Early Life and Education

Konstanty Zarębski was born in 1866 in Odessa, Ukraine. He studied physics and mathematics at the University of Odessa, where he developed his passion for the sea.

Seafaring Adventures

As a volunteer sailor, Zarębski embarked on expeditions to China, Japan, India, Egypt, and Syria. His involvement in a Polish anti-Russian organization led to his exile in Arkhangelsk in 1894. There, he graduated from a maritime school and gained permission to travel on the merchant ship "Derzhava." Later, he captained the ship "Nadezhda" and sailed in the Arctic.

Artistic Pursuits

After completing his sentence, Zarębski spent two years in Odessa, where he married Isabella Ketlinska. He then moved to Krakow (1901-1906) and studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts.

Wartime Heroism

Zarębski actively participated in the wars of 1918-1921. Enlisting as a private, he rose to the rank of general in just three years. He served as a personal aide-de-camp to General Pilsudski and played a pivotal role in the restoration of Polish independence.

Naval and Maritime Activism

Zarębski played a significant role in the establishment of the National Navy Committee and served as the director of the Marine and River League (later renamed the Marine and Colonial League).

Arrest and Imprisonment

In 1941, Zarębski was arrested in Lviv by the NKVD. He was sentenced to resettlement in the Krasnoyarsk Region as a socially dangerous element. During his transfer to Kherson, he contracted cholera and died at the age of 75.

Legacy

Zarębski's grave is located in the Old Cemetery in Kherson. In his memory, the Polish association "Polonia" erected a commemorative sign at his presumed burial site.
