Biography of Mark Delavan
Mark Delavan is an American opera singer known for his powerful bass-baritone voice. He was born in Princeton, New Jersey and received his higher education at Oral Roberts University.
Early Career
Delavan made his professional opera debut in 1986 at the San Francisco Opera. For the next three years, he primarily performed supporting roles on stage.
Rise to Fame
In 2001, Delavan made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, portraying Amonasro in Giuseppe Verdi's "Aida." He quickly gained popularity among American opera lovers and decided to venture into international performances.
In 2003, Delavan made his debut in the United Kingdom, starring in the title role of "Macbeth." The following year, he performed at the Bavarian State Opera in both the title role of "Rigoletto" and as Don Carlo in "La Forza del Destino."
International Success
In the 2005-2006 season, Delavan made his debut at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, portraying Sheriff Jack Rance in the revival of Giacomo Puccini's "La Fanciulla del West." A year later, he performed in the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin in "Salome."
Delavan also showcased his talent at the Saito Kinen classical music festival in Matsumoto, Japan in 2007, playing Tomsky in "The Queen of Spades."
Continued Success
Delavan continued to enjoy success in the United States, performing at the New York City Opera. He took on familiar roles such as Rigoletto, Macbeth, and Falstaff, as well as new roles like the lead in Stephen Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd." He also appeared in various productions of "Les Contes d'Hoffman," "Tosca," "Attila," "Carmen," and "Lucia di Lammermoor."
In 2010, Delavan performed in Denmark, Spain, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Berlin, and Prague, captivating audiences with his brilliant voice. The 2010-2011 season featured Delavan in challenging roles, including Iago in Verdi's "Otello," receiving acclaim in Philadelphia and Berlin. He also portrayed Jupiter in Richard Strauss' "Die Liebe der Danae" at the Berlin State Opera.
Throughout his career, Delavan has also proven his versatility by portraying Odin (Wotan) in three productions of Wagner's "Ring Cycle."
Currently, Mark Delavan continues to be recognized for his unique and charismatic bass-baritone voice. He remains an active performer in both the United States and Europe, consistently impressing audiences with his talent.
