Biography of Marko Devic

Early Life and Career in Ukraine

Marko Devic, a Ukrainian footballer of Serbian origin, was born on October 27, 1983, in Belgrade. His childhood coincided with the harsh war years when the country was torn apart by bombings and armed conflicts. He began his football career as a player for the local team "Zvezdara," where he played 14 matches. Devic also played for "Zheleznik," "Radnicki," and "Vozdovac." In 2005, he joined the Ukrainian club "Volyn," which was coached by one of Ukraine's experienced specialists, Vitaliy Kvartsyany. In his first season abroad, he played 33 matches and scored 2 goals for the team.

Success with Metalist Kharkiv

In 2006, Devic transferred to the Kharkiv-based club "Metalist." Initially playing as a midfielder, he eventually transitioned to the position of striker. In his second season with the team, Devic became the top scorer of the Ukrainian Championship with 19 goals. He also secured second place, after Alexander Gladkiy of "Shakhtar Donetsk," in the "goals + assists" category. Devic quickly became the team's leading goalscorer, winning the hearts of Kharkiv supporters, who chanted his name at every home game. During his time with Metalist, Devic helped the team secure silver and bronze medals in the Ukrainian Championship.

Move to Shakhtar Donetsk and Return to Metalist

In February 2011, Devic extended his contract with Metalist until 2015. However, in the summer of 2012, he was set to sign a contract with Kyiv-based club "Dynamo." Instead, on May 25, he transferred to "Shakhtar Donetsk" for a transfer fee of 5 million euros. Devic made his debut for Shakhtar in the victorious Ukrainian Super Cup match against "Metalurg" Donetsk, coming on as a substitute in the 77th minute. He played 12 matches in the Ukrainian Championship, which Shakhtar also won. Although he didn't establish himself as a regular starter in the team, Devic had the opportunity to play two matches in the UEFA Champions League against "Nordsjaelland" and "Juventus." On February 28, 2013, Devic returned to "Metalist" after not finding a permanent place in Shakhtar Donetsk.

Later Career

On August 10, 2017, Devic joined the Liechtenstein-based club "Vaduz" in the Swiss second division. He scored his debut goal for the team against "Rapperswil," securing a 2-1 victory for Vaduz. During his time with Vaduz, Devic won the Liechtenstein Cup. In August 2018, he joined the Azerbaijani club "Sabah" and scored two goals in his first two matches. He played a total of 21 matches for Sabah, scoring 8 goals. In August 2019, Devic returned to his former club "Vozdovac" in Serbia. He announced his retirement in April 2020.

International Career

In the summer of 2008, Devic became a Ukrainian citizen, allowing him to represent the Ukrainian national team. He made his debut for Ukraine in November 2008, playing one half in a friendly match against Norway. On February 9, 2011, Devic scored his first goal for the national team in a friendly match against Sweden. He went on to score his second goal in a match against Austria on November 15, 2011. Devic also played in the UEFA Euro 2012, where he controversially had a goal disallowed against England. Devic scored a hat-trick against San Marino on October 15, 2013, becoming the first Ukrainian player to achieve this feat.

Personal Life

Devic married Milica in the summer of 2013, and they have a daughter named Sara.
