Early Life and Career
Born in Split, Croatia (then part of Yugoslavia), Ljubo Benčić began his football career with Hajduk Split in 1921. By 1924, he had already become the club's all-time top scorer, netting a remarkable 43 goals.
Club Career
Benčić played his entire playing career with Hajduk Split. Over the course of 13 seasons, he made 353 appearances and scored a staggering 355 goals. This tally currently places him third on the club's all-time scoring list.
He helped Hajduk win two Yugoslav Championships and was the league's top scorer in 1928 with 8 goals. Unfortunately, a severe injury in 1933 ended his career prematurely.
International Career
Benčić made his debut for the Yugoslav national team on September 28, 1924, against Czechoslovakia. He played a total of 5 matches, scoring one goal in a 1-7 defeat against the same opponent on October 28, 1927.
Managerial Career
After retiring as a player, Benčić embarked on a managerial career. He coached Hajduk Split, Milicionar, Trešnjevka, and Zadar in his home country, as well as Bologna and Pescara in Italy.
