Early Career and European Success
Rabiu Afolabi, a Nigerian defender, began his professional career with NEPA FC. After a short stint there, he moved to Standard Liège in Belgium, where he spent three seasons. In 2000, Afolabi signed with Italian club Napoli but failed to establish himself as a regular. He subsequently returned to Standard Liège.
Triumphs with Austria Wien
In 2003, Afolabi joined Austria Wien as a free agent. During his time with the club, he enjoyed significant success. In the 2004-2005 season, he reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals. Additionally, he won the Austrian Cup in 2005 and two Austrian Super Cups.
Transfer to France and Cup Success
In 2005, Afolabi moved to French club Sochaux for a transfer fee of €2 million. Over the next four seasons in France, he helped the club win the Coupe de France in 2007.
Return to Austria and National Team Success
On August 29, 2009, Afolabi joined Red Bull Salzburg, winning the Austrian Bundesliga in his first season with the club. At the international level, he represented Nigeria's under-19 team in the 1999 African Youth Championship, scoring twice in the semi-final against Cameroon. The following year, he captained the Nigerian youth team at the FIFA World Youth Championship, leading them to the quarter-finals.
Afolabi made his senior international debut for Nigeria in 2000 and was selected for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. However, he did not make an appearance during the tournament. In 2010, he was once again included in Nigeria's World Cup squad.
