Early Life and Education
At the age of eight, Mark Krasnosel'skii lost his father and began his academic journey at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Lviv University in 1939. He attended seminars led by the renowned Polish mathematician Stefan Banach.
Wartime and Academic Growth
The outbreak of World War II forced him to evacuate to Krasnodar, where he worked and studied at the Pedagogical Institute in Makhachkala. Despite his attempts to join the Red Army, he was denied due to his residence in western Ukraine. In 1942, he relocated to Tbilisi.
In 1943, Krasnosel'skii enrolled in the postgraduate program at the Tbilisi Mathematical Institute named after A. M. Razmadze, where he studied under I. N. Vekua. He later transferred to the postgraduate program at the Steklov Institute of Mathematics in Moscow in 1945. Under the guidance of L. A. Lyusternik, he defended his dissertation and obtained his doctorate in 1951.
Academic Career
Krasnosel'skii served as a professor at the Department of Mathematics at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute from 1953 to 1965. From 1965 to 1993, he held a professorship at the Department of Differential Equations at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Moscow State University. In 1993, he moved to the Department of General Problems of Control.
Research and Legacy
Krasnosel'skii's research focused primarily on differential equations and functional analysis. He authored over 236 scientific articles and three monographs, and supervised 41 candidates of science, 10 of whom went on to earn doctorates. In 1992, he was awarded the I. G. Petrovsky Prize for his outstanding contributions to mathematics.
