Biography of Marcelo Anthony
Marcelo Anthony, an actor who unexpectedly gained fame, the love of the audience, a good salary, a signed contract with Globo, his first car, and a bank account - there was plenty to lose his head over. At first, Marcelo was simply overwhelmed by the sudden success. "He is a delicate, elegant, and talented actor. Our relationship is like that of a father and son, just like in the novel 'Terra Nostra'. I have great respect for this young man!" said actor Raul Cortes. Early Life and Career
Marcelo Anthony never dreamed of becoming an actor; all his career aspirations were related to journalism. He enrolled in the Faculty of Social Relations at the University (UGF), but soon started skipping lectures, preferring to have beers with his friends at a nearby bar. Marcelo came from a modest family, with a father who was a civil servant, a homemaker mother, and two siblings. Money was tight, and there was a time when Marcelo couldn't afford to pay for his university education, so he had to miss an entire course. He found a job at a tourist agency, relying on his excellent knowledge of English and Spanish. As a charming guide, Marcelo took tourists to the main attractions of Rio de Janeiro, mostly following the Sugarloaf-Oz dos Lagos-Maracanã route. During his free time, Marcelo indulged in reading ancient philosophers, Nietzsche's works, astrology, and amateur theater. The world of theater captivated Marcelo so much that he decided to quit university altogether and start rehearsing for his first play, "The Marriage of Figaro," directed by Italo Rossi. After that, he enrolled in an acting course with Aldebaro Filho. However, to afford the course, Marcelo had to work as a waiter. For about six months, he worked as a waiter at the Theater Café, which happened to be owned by actor Miguel Falabella. Marcelo finished his work at 3 a.m. and waited for the morning bus until 5 a.m. when he finally arrived in his hometown of Niteroi (a suburb of Rio de Janeiro). In his spare time, he attended auditions and castings at Rede Globo, but all his attempts to break into the big screen ended in failure.
Rise to Stardom
Finally, his auditions for the role in the mini-series "A Chance in Antarctica" ended as usual - with no success. "Too handsome!" was the director's verdict. However, Marcelo managed to enroll in the Globo Television Acting Course in 1994, joining the same group as Letícia Spiller and Mônica Carvalho. After completing the training, Marcelo's information was added to Globo's database of young actors, but there were still no worthy job offers. Marcelo fondly recalls that time, saying, "I couldn't find a job; everyone turned me down because of my appearance. So, my infamous beauty worked against me for a long time!" However, Marcelo didn't give up; he actively participated in commercials, earned good money, and helped his parents financially. In 1996, while working diligently on another commercial in Tunisia, Marcelo received a fax from Globo. It offered him the opportunity to audition for the role of Bruno Berdinazzi in the telenovela "Meat King" (known as "Fatal Inheritance" in Russia). This role initially didn't excite Marcelo, as it seemed insignificant to the young actor. However, he was selected, and after the premiere episodes of the telenovela, Marcelo had to admit that his time to shine had come. Bruno Berdinazzi, a romantic and handsome Italian character, won the hearts of Brazilian women.
Success and Personal Life
The sudden fame, love from the audience, good salary, signed contract with Globo, first car, and a bank account gave Marcelo plenty of reasons to be overwhelmed by success. However, one incident changed his perspective. One day, fans ambushed Marcelo outside a store, despite him having four bodyguards. The most ardent admirers managed to reach their idol and literally tore him apart for souvenirs, leaving him scratched all over. In a later interview, Marcelo confessed that this incident opened his eyes to the "dark side of fame" and completely eradicated his "emerging megalomania." Today, the actor lives a "normal life" as an ordinary Brazilian TV star. He works a lot, participates in charitable shows, gives interviews, and appears in commercials. He is in a civil partnership with actress Monica Torres, goes grocery shopping himself, and cooks wonderful dinners for his beloved.
