Mart Laar: A Formidable Politician and Statesman
Mart Laar holds the distinction of serving as the Prime Minister of Estonia twice, from 1992 to 1994 and again from 1999 to 2002. He has also served as Minister of Defense from 2011 to 2012 and was the Chairman of the conservative Isamaa party.
Early Life and Education
Laar was born in Estonia and earned a degree in history from the University of Tartu in 1983. He later pursued a Master's degree in history from the same university in 1995 and a Doctorate in history in 2005.
Political Career
First Term as Prime Minister (1992-1994)Laar's first term as Prime Minister was marked by economic reforms that paved the way for Estonia's eventual accession to the European Union. However, his tenure was cut short due to allegations of corruption and a scandal involving arms procurement.
Return to Leadership (1999-2002)
After a five-year absence, Laar returned to the post of Prime Minister in 1999. During this term, he focused on improving the economy and guiding Estonia towards EU membership.

International Diplomacy
In 2006, Laar became an advisor to Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. Later, he served as an advisor to the Moldovan government in 2010.
Defense Policy
Laar has advocated for a strong military defense against Russia. In 2011, he proposed the creation of a tank brigade and the formation of partisan units to protect Estonia in the event of a conflict.
Awards and Recognition
Laar has been recognized for his contributions to economic and political development. In 2006, he was awarded the Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty.
