Martin How is an Australian scientist and biologist, currently working at the University of Queensland in Australia. He is renowned for his research on the peculiar coloration of zebras and recently proposed a new theory to explain why zebras have stripes.
The Zebra's Stripes
For a long time, the unique coloration of zebras has fascinated scientists, leading to various theories about its purpose. In collaboration with a colleague from Royal Holloway, University of London, Dr. How put forth his own theory. According to him, the stripes create a visual illusion when zebras are in motion, which confuses predators, including large carnivores and harmful insects.
Research and Findings
To support their theory, Dr. Martin How and Professor Johannes Zanker analyzed numerous videos, photographs, and articles about zebras. Through computer simulations, they discovered that the stripes create an optical illusion, making it difficult for predators to determine the zebra's direction of movement.
