Jalal Aliyev: A Life in Science and Politics
Early Life and EducationJalal Aliyev was born on June 30, 1928, in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan, into a large family. His brother, Heydar Aliyev, later became President of Azerbaijan, while two other brothers, Hasan and Agil, became academicians of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).
In 1944, Jalal graduated from the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Nakhchivan Teachers' Institute. In 1951, he earned a degree in biology from Azerbaijan State University.
Academic Career
Jalal Aliyev's academic career flourished. In 1976, he was elected a Corresponding Member of ANAS, and in 1980, a Full Member. He published over 500 scientific works, including 20 monographs and books. Additionally, 340 of his scientific works were published internationally.
His research focused on the theory of photosynthetic productivity as the basis for crop yield, particularly in wheat.
Political Involvement
Beyond academia, Jalal Aliyev was also active in politics. He was elected to the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) of Azerbaijan three times (1995, 2000, and 2005).
International Recognition
Jalal Aliyev's scientific contributions earned him international recognition. He became a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Ukrainian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the Republic of Belarus.
He was also a member of prestigious international organizations, including the International Plant Molecular Biology Society, the American Society of Plant Biologists, and the International Society for Plant Physiology.
Legacy
Jalal Aliyev's legacy extends beyond his scientific and political achievements. He was a prominent figure in Azerbaijan's development and left a significant impact on the country's scientific and political landscape.
