Early Life and Career Beginnings

Martin Kove was born on March 6, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York, to a Jewish family. Before pursuing acting, Kove held various odd jobs, including portraying Santa Claus at a New York department store. He met Sylvester Stallone, then working as an usher at a movie theater, marking the beginning of a lifelong friendship.

Breakthrough with "The Karate Kid"

Kove began acting in films at age 24, initially landing minor roles. His breakthrough came in 1984 with the release of "The Karate Kid." He portrayed John Kreese, a ruthless karate instructor who teaches his students to be merciless towards their opponents, jokingly referring to his character as "Han Solo on steroids." Director John Avildsen cast Kove based on a photograph, recognizing him as the perfect fit for the menacing coach.

The "Karate Kid" Trilogy and Beyond

The success of "The Karate Kid" spawned two sequels, with Kove reprising his role. During the filming of "The Karate Kid Part II," he injured his hand breaking a car window but continued to act as if nothing had happened. Despite his character's antagonistic nature, Kove embraced the role, relishing the audience's hatred towards Kreese.

In 1981, Kove married New Zealander Vivienne Watson. Nine years later, they welcomed twins, Jesse and Rachel. After 24 years of marriage, they divorced in 2005. Jesse Kove pursued an acting career, influenced by his childhood on film sets, and starred on Broadway. Rachel Kove, who appeared briefly in one film, is now a life coach and CEO of Transformational Solutions. Kove has been in a relationship with Mary Scavo Squire since 2017.

"Cobra Kai" and Resurgence

A new wave of popularity came for Kove with the release of "Cobra Kai" in 2018, a sequel series to "The Karate Kid" set 30 years later. Kreese's influence on the other characters is explored, and Kove joined the series as a regular cast member. To prepare, he underwent intensive training.
