Early Career and Youth National TeamsMartin Silva, a Uruguayan goalkeeper, began his career in 1999 with Defensor Sporting's youth teams. He progressed through the club's youth ranks, representing Uruguay at all junior levels from 1999 to 2003.
Breakthrough with Defensor Sporting
Silva made his professional debut for Defensor Sporting in 2002 and became a regular starter in 2006. With the club, he achieved notable success in international tournaments. In 2007, Defensor Sporting reached the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores, losing only in a penalty shootout to eventual finalist Gremio. In the South American Cup later that year, they advanced to the quarterfinals, falling to River Plate on away goals. In 2008, Silva played a key role in Defensor Sporting's Uruguayan Primera División title victory, establishing himself as one of the most promising goalkeepers in the league.
Uruguayan National Team Debut
Silva's impressive performances led to his debut for the Uruguayan national team in 2009, under coach Oscar Tabarez. Despite a disappointing 1-0 loss to Algeria, his leadership qualities became apparent. In 2010, he was part of the squad that finished fourth at the FIFA World Cup.
Captaincy and Move to Club Olimpia
By 2011, Silva had become the captain of Defensor Sporting, leading the club with great popularity among its fans. In the middle of that year, he made a significant move to Club Olimpia in Paraguay. With Olimpia, he immediately regained the Paraguayan championship title, breaking the club's 11-year title drought.
Copa Libertadores Finalist
In 2013, Silva's Olimpia reached the final of the Copa Libertadores, narrowly losing to Atletico Mineiro in a penalty shootout. The same year, he made his second appearance for Uruguay, keeping a clean sheet in a Confederations Cup match against Tahiti.
Later Career and Retirement
After leaving Olimpia, Silva spent time with Vasco da Gama in Brazil and Libertad in Paraguay. He ended his career with Nacional in his native Uruguay in 2020.
