Early Life and Family

Mary Landrieu was born into a prominent political family in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her father, Maurice, served as Mayor of New Orleans from 1970 to 1978 and later as the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 1979 to 1981. Her brother, Mitch, was the Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana from 2004 to 2010 before becoming Mayor of New Orleans.

Political Beginnings

Landrieu graduated from Louisiana State University in 1977 and began her political career by serving in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1980 to 1988. She subsequently became State Treasurer from 1988 to 1996. In 1995, she considered running for Governor of Louisiana but did not pursue the nomination.

United States Senate

Landrieu was successfully elected to the United States Senate in 1996. As a member of the Democratic Party, she belonged to the party's conservative wing. She was a potential vice presidential candidate for the Democrats in the 2004 election.

Hurricane Katrina and Recovery

Landrieu played a pivotal role in the recovery of her home state following Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent flooding of New Orleans in September 2005. She was critical of President George W. Bush and the federal government for their perceived inaction in responding to the disaster.

Sanctions and Foreign Relations

In March 2014, Landrieu was included on a list of individuals sanctioned by the Russian Foreign Ministry, restricting her travel to the Russian Federation. The sanctions were imposed in response to American sanctions related to Ukraine and Crimea.
