Early Life and Education
Robert Sargent "Bobby" Shriver III is an American activist, attorney, journalist, and Democratic member of the Santa Monica City Council in California. He was born on April 28, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, to Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Robert Sargent Shriver Jr., the eldest of their five children.
Shriver attended and graduated with honors from the Yale College branch of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where he was a member of the Scroll and Key Society. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 1981.
Legal and Business Career
Following law school, Shriver served as a clerk to Judge Stephen R. Reinhardt of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He then moved to New York City and entered the venture capital business. Along with his father, Eli Jacobs, and Larry Lucchino, he was an investor in the Baltimore Orioles baseball team from 1989 to 1993.
Shriver is an attorney and the president of RSS Inc., a film, music, and philanthropy company based in Beverly Hills, California. In 1987, he produced a prime-time movie about the Special Olympics, a program for youth with disabilities founded by his mother in 1968. The film and its sequel raised over $55 million for the Special Olympics program. He also produced the 1994 action comedy film "True Lies" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is married to Shriver's sister, Maria Shriver.
Political Career
In November 2004, Shriver successfully ran for a seat on the Santa Monica City Council. He was one of 30 candidates vying for four open seats and received 23,260 votes (16.5%). Shriver was reelected to the council in 2008, again receiving the most votes in a race with 13 candidates for four seats.
As a Democratic councilman, he has focused on issues such as homelessness, especially among veterans, and the cleanup of Santa Monica Bay. In 2006, Shriver and U2 frontman Bono launched a fundraising campaign for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria through their company (Product) Red.
Personal Life and Legacy
Shriver has been married to Malissa Feruzzi since May 7, 2005. He is the stepfather to Natasha Lee and the father of a daughter, Rosemary Scarlett Shriver, who was born on January 8, 2009.
Shriver's work in public service and activism has made a significant impact on society. He is known for his dedication to helping the disadvantaged and his commitment to environmental protection.
