Biography of Mary McAleese

Mary McAleese was born in 1951 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to a Catholic family. After excelling in school, she attended Queen's University Belfast and graduated with a law degree. In 1975, McAleese moved to the capital of Ireland, Dublin, where at the age of 24, she became the youngest professor at Trinity College, teaching criminal law.

A Career in Journalism and Politics

In 1979, McAleese embarked on a successful career as a correspondent for Irish television. She then became actively involved in the struggle between the Catholic Church and the movement for liberal transformation in Irish society. Despite being a devout Catholic, McAleese publicly spoke out against the ban on contraceptives, divorce, and abortion. Her efforts were recognized by the Church, and in 1984, she was included in a delegation representing the Church at the national forum "New Ireland".

In the same year, McAleese took her first steps into politics by joining the ruling party, Fianna Fáil. However, her bid for a seat in the Irish Parliament in 1987 was unsuccessful. After her defeat, she returned to Belfast with her husband and three children, disappearing from the public eye for a long time.

A Rise to Presidency

McAleese's name resurfaced in September of this year, just before the national campaign for the presidential election. Known for voting based on their hearts rather than their minds, the Irish people elected McAleese as their president on October 30th with the largest margin in the country's history. Her presidency marked a turning point for Ireland, as it shifted towards conservatism and a return to traditional values.

Although the president's role in Ireland is mainly ceremonial, McAleese's presence in the presidency is seen as a guarantee of Ireland's unbreakable connection to the Catholic community, particularly in Northern Ireland. She became the first Irish head of state to be born, raised, and reside in Northern Ireland.

Plans for the Presidency

Although McAleese has not officially taken office yet, her inauguration will be held on November 11th. She has already outlined her priorities for her seven-year presidency. Firstly, she aims to align national legislation with the will of the people as stated in the constitution. Secondly, she intends to be open and accessible to all Irish citizens, actively addressing their concerns. Lastly, McAleese plans to serve as a competent ambassador for Ireland abroad, representing it as a dynamic and modern country with a young, highly educated population characterized by pluralism and an entrepreneurial spirit.
