Mary Steenburgen was born on February 8, 1953, in Newport, Arkansas. Her parents were Nelle, a school secretary, and Maurice Steenburgen, a freight train conductor for Missouri Pacific Railroad. Mary grew up in North Little Rock, Arkansas, and developed an early interest in the arts and acting.
In 1972, she moved to New York City to study at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. Her talent caught the attention of Jack Nicholson, which marked the beginning of her acting career.
