Biography of Marians Pahars

Marians Pahars, the best Latvian forward, is widely regarded as the most popular and successful Latvian player in the West. He began his professional career at Skonto Riga, where he became the Latvian champion and earned a call-up to the Latvian national team. In the 1998 season, he scored 19 goals in 26 games and decided to move abroad.

Move to Southampton

Pahars had trials with Italian club Salernitana, German club Werder Bremen, and Austrian club Casino, but it was Southampton, recommended by Latvian national team manager Harry Johnson, who signed him. On February 18, 1999, he played for the reserve team against Oxford United, with Southampton winning 7-1 and Pahars scoring a hat-trick. Impressed by his performance, the club signed him for approximately £800,000, although work permit issues delayed his arrival until March. Pahars became the first Latvian to play in the English Premier League.

Success at Southampton

Pahars made his debut for Southampton on April 5, 1999, against Coventry City, coming on in the 70th minute. He scored his first goal for the club on April 17 against Blackburn Rovers, resulting in a 3-3 draw. Pahars' timely arrival at the club helped them avoid relegation from the Premier League. In the final match of the season, Southampton had to win against Everton to stay in the league. They won 2-0, and Pahars scored a brace, effectively saving Southampton and becoming a fan favorite.

Under the management of Glenn Hoddle in the following season, Pahars was moved slightly deeper into midfield, but still managed to become the team's top scorer with 13 goals. One of his standout performances was in a 3-3 draw against Manchester United in the first round, where he scored one goal. However, in the second round, his goal couldn't prevent a 1-3 loss to Manchester United. Southampton finished 15th in the league, battling to avoid relegation.

Continued Success and Injuries

Southampton extended Pahars' contract for five years, recognizing his talent and importance to the team. In the 2000/2001 season, he started brilliantly, scoring six goals in September and August. However, he was moved back to midfield and struggled for form until the end of the season. Despite his efforts, Southampton defeated Manchester United 2-1, with Pahars scoring a goal. In the following season, Pahars began well again, but injuries hampered his performance. Towards the end of the season, he had scored 16 goals, making him the second-best attacking pair in England alongside his strike partner James Beattie, who had 14 goals. Pahars scored against Manchester United again, but it wasn't enough as they lost 1-6.

Injuries and Departure

During the summer of 2002, Pahars underwent hernia surgery, which caused him to miss the preseason. He recovered partially, but then sustained an ankle injury, requiring further treatment. As a result, he had to undergo another operation ahead of the FA Cup final, in which Southampton unexpectedly reached under the guidance of new manager Gordon Strachan. Despite Southampton's loss to Arsenal in the final, Pahars had no involvement in the success.

The next season was plagued by injuries for Pahars, hindering his progress. He struggled to maintain his form, constantly battling with injuries. Ultimately, his career at Southampton was shattered, and the fans never witnessed the same level of performance from him again. In the summer of 2004, he represented the Latvian national team in the European Championship, but injuries during preseason once again kept him out for the entire season. Southampton suffered relegation from the Premier League for the first time in 28 years. In the first division, Pahars continued to face injuries and recovery, leading to his departure from Southampton.

After leaving Southampton, Pahars joined Cypriot club Anorthosis under Georgian coach Temuri Ketsbaia, signing a three-year contract. He played 17 matches and scored four goals in his first season with Anorthosis. Pahars, along with Matt Le Tissier, who played alongside him during his Southampton career, is considered one of the best players in Southampton's history. In England, he was often referred to as the "Latvian Michael Owen," but unfortunately, like Owen, he was unable to showcase his full potential.
