Biography of Masha Tsigal

Masha Tsigal, a designer with her unique and individual style, has firmly established herself as one of the most famous and sought-after designers in Russia. She was born on January 3rd in the renowned artistic family of Tsigal-Birshtein in Moscow. Her grandmother, Nina Vatolina, was a famous poster graphic artist who created the poster "Don't Talk!" in 1941. Her grandfather, Max Birshstein, was a prominent painter, and her other grandfather, Vladimir Tsigal, was a sculptor who built many monuments in Moscow. Her father, Alexander Tsigal, is a sculptor, and her mother, Anna Birshtein, is an artist whose works are displayed in the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum. Despite being born into an artistic family, Masha decided early on that she did not want to become an artist herself.

Early Life and Education

In her childhood, Masha enjoyed dressing up her mother and decorating their home more than drawing. She attended regular school, specialized English classes, and art school, and also pursued figure skating. After completing her general education, Masha enrolled in Stroganov Academy, although she admits it was due to connections rather than merit. During her time at Stroganov Academy, Masha studied glasswork and completed an internship at the Gusev Crystal Factory. However, she realized that her passion lay elsewhere and decided to leave Stroganov Academy.

Early Career and Rave Culture

During the tumultuous 1990s in Moscow, Masha became involved in the rave culture and started organizing rave events and parties. She became known for her unique fashion sense and began making clothes out of unconventional materials. Masha's first collection, "Let's Be Like the Sun," made from vinyl records, gained attention and recognition after being showcased at the "Hermitage" club. This collection brought her widespread fame, and she went on to win the main prize at the Unbridled Fashion competition in Riga, where Paco Rabanne was one of the judges.

Artistic Journey and London Experience

Masha's designs during this time were more art projects than traditional fashion shows. She participated in art exhibitions and performances, which she sold to clubs as shows. However, she felt the need for a change and decided to pursue further education in London. She received grants from the British Council and the Royal Society to study fashion marketing at the London College of Fashion. During her time in London, Masha worked as an assistant for renowned designers such as Zandra Rhodes and Mr. Pearl.

After completing her studies in London, Masha returned to Moscow, where she found a changed fashion landscape. She started her own brand, Masha Tsigal Design International, and began creating collections that combined sportswear and glamour. Her designs gained popularity and were sold in prestigious stores such as Podium and UK-style. Masha also worked as a stylist for music videos and collaborated with popular Russian musicians. Her designs were worn by stars like Whitney Houston and Prince Albert of Monaco, further cementing her reputation as a successful designer.
