Early Life and Education

Dr. Muhammad Pezeshkian was born on 29 September 1954, in Mahabad, Iranian Azerbaijan. His father was a Turkish Azeri, and his mother was also of Turkish descent, contrary to some claims.

After completing his diploma in 1973, Pezeshkian served his conscription in Zabol, where he developed an interest in medicine. He subsequently studied General Medicine at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences.

Military Service and Wartime Efforts

During the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), Pezeshkian was actively involved in frontline medical operations, organizing medical teams and serving as a physician. He completed his General Practice residency in 1985 and began teaching Physiology.

Medical Career

After the war, Pezeshkian specialized in General Surgery at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. In 1993, he earned a degree in Cardiovascular Surgery from Tehran University of Medical Sciences. He later advanced to the position of President of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, which he held for five years.

Religious and Social Involvement

Pezeshkian is a Quranic scholar and orator of Nahj al-Balagha, a significant text in Shia Islam. He is also a member of the Iran-Turkey Friendship Society.

Political Career

Pezeshkian's political journey began when he joined Mohammad Khatami's administration as Deputy Minister of Health in 1997. In 2001, he became Minister of Health and Medical Education, serving until 2005.

He has since been elected to the Iranian Parliament five times and served as First Deputy Speaker from 2016 to 2020. He ran for President in 2013 but withdrew his candidacy. His nomination was rejected in the 2021 presidential election.

However, in the snap presidential election of 2024, Pezeshkian qualified as the sole reformist candidate and emerged victorious, securing more than 53% of votes in the second round.

Personal Life

Pezeshkian was married to a gynecologist who passed away in a car accident in 1993, along with one of their children. He raised their two sons and a daughter as a single father. His daughter, Zahra Pezeshkian, holds a Master's degree in Chemistry from Sharif University of Technology and worked at Jam Petrochemical before the Rouhani government came to power.

Pezeshkian is an avid supporter of the Tractor football club.
