Early Life and Education
Mate Granić was born on September 19, 1947, in Baška Voda, Croatia. In 1971, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zagreb, specializing in diabetology.
Medical Career
After graduating, Granić embarked on a successful medical career. He completed internships at medical centers in Harvard and Munich and became a consultant for the World Health Organization. Before entering politics, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zagreb.
Political Beginnings
Granić joined the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and played a key role in drafting the constitution of independent Croatia alongside Franjo Tuđman and his followers. He became the Vice Chairman of the HDZ and was appointed Vice Premier in July 1991.
Ministerial Positions
In the government, Granić oversaw healthcare, education, science, and culture. Later, he was also appointed head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Diplomatic and Language Skills
Granić is fluent in English and German. He is married and has three children.
