Early Life and Education

Matore Abdul Djalil, Indonesia's current Minister of Defense, was born in Semarang, Central Java. In 1968, he graduated with a degree in economics from Satya Wacana Christian University in Salatiga.

Political Career

Djalil's political journey began with the United Development Party (PPP), where he served as general secretary from 1989 to 1994. In 1998, he joined the National Awakening Party, founded by Abdurrahman Wahid. However, he later distanced himself from the party and its president after recognizing its precarious position.

Appointment as Minister of Defense

In a significant shift away from authoritarian rule, President Megawati Sukarnoputri, who appreciated Djalil's political acumen, appointed him as Minister of Defense. This appointment marked the second time a civilian had held this crucial position since the fall of General Suharto's dictatorship in 1998.
