Clément Beaune: From Youth Activist to French Foreign Minister
Early Life and Political BeginningsClément Beaune was born on March 26, 1985, in Versailles, France, but spent his childhood and adolescence in Spain and Argentina. It was during Argentina's severe economic crisis in 2001 that Beaune first became politically involved.
Education and Student Politics
Upon his return to France, Beaune pursued higher education at the University of Poitiers. In 2006, as a student, he joined the movement protesting the "First Employment Contract" law. He also became affiliated with the National Union of French Students and the Young Socialists' Movement, supporting Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Following Strauss-Kahn's resignation due to the New York City scandal, Beaune became an advisor to Jean-Paul Huchon, the Socialist president of the Île-de-France regional council.
Political Career
In 2014, Beaune began collaborating with Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron. In 2015, he actively participated in the organization of the "Youth with Macron" movement, and in 2017, he worked on Macron's presidential campaign. After Macron's victory, Beaune became a political advisor to the president. In 2019, he led the campaign for the European Parliament elections and was elected as a Member of the European Parliament.
European Parliament Leadership
On October 19, 2021, Beaune was elected president of the Renew Europe group in the European Parliament, the third-largest group after the conservative EPP and the social-democratic S&D. All three groups were part of the governing coalition supporting then-European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Renaissance Party Secretary General
On September 17, 2022, the "La République En Marche!" party was reorganized as the "Renaissance" party, and Beaune was elected as its secretary-general.
French Foreign Minister
On January 11, 2024, Beaune was appointed Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs in the Attal government.
Personal Life
Beaune was in a civil partnership with French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal from 2018 to 2023.
