Matthew Antoine: American Skeleton Racer and World Champion
Matthew Antoine, born April 2, 1985, in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, is an American skeleton racer who has represented the United States on the World Cup circuit since 2003.
Early Life and Athletic Beginnings
After graduating high school, Antoine attended California University of Pennsylvania, where he excelled in track and field. In 2002, drawn by the sport's inclusion in the Olympics, he transitioned to skeleton.
Career on the World Cup and Intercontinental Cup
Antoine initially competed in minor tournaments, finishing in the top ten of Intercontinental Cup races and earning podiums in America's Cup and Europa Cup events. He made his debut on the prestigious World Cup circuit in the 2008-09 season, posting impressive results for a newcomer. In January 2009, he clinched a bronze medal in Whistler, Canada.
2011: US Skeleton Athlete of the Year
Antoine was awarded U.S. Skeleton Athlete of the Year in 2011.2012 World Championship: Gold and Top-Five Finish
At the 2012 World Championships in Lake Placid, Antoine achieved his best individual performance to date, sharing fifth place with Latvian skeleton racer Tomass Dukurs. He also triumphed in the mixed bobsled-skeleton team event, winning a gold medal.
