Matthew Macfadyen (born on October 17, 1974) is an English actor, best known for his roles as British intelligence officer Tom Quinn in the BBC television series "Spooks" and as Fitzwilliam Darcy in the film adaptation of the classic novel "Pride and Prejudice".

Early Life and Education

Macfadyen was born in Norfolk and attended various schools in England, Scotland, and Indonesia. At the age of seventeen, after studying at Oakham School in Rutland, he was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Career in Theater

After three years of training at the academy, Macfadyen quickly became a well-known theater actor in Britain. His experience working with the company "Cheek by Jowl" was instrumental in his success. He played Antonio in "The Duchess of Malfi", Charles Surface in "The School for Scandal", and Benedick in "Much Ado About Nothing". His portrayal of Benedick, with his signature mustache and roaring laughter, gained particular acclaim. In 2005, Macfadyen played Prince Hal in the Royal National Theatre's production of "Henry IV" alongside Michael Gambon.

Television Breakthrough

Macfadyen's breakthrough on television came with his role as Heathcliff in the television adaptation of Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights". He went on to work in several other television dramas, including "Warriors" and "The Way We Live Now". In 2001, he landed another leading role in the BBC Two series "Perfect Strangers" directed by Stephen Poliakoff. However, his most famous role to date is that of a British spy in the series "Spooks" (also known as "MI-5").

Recognition and Current Work

In 2007, Macfadyen starred in the Channel 4 drama "Secret Life", which tackled the timely issue of pedophilia. He was nominated for and later won the Royal Television Society Award for Best Actor for his performance in this role. Macfadyen's acting career continues to thrive, with a focus on television, although he also continues to work in film.
