Matthias Guggenberger is an Austrian skeleton racer who has represented his country in the sport since 2005.
Early Life and Career
Guggenberger was born on September 24, 1984, in Innsbruck, Tyrol. He developed a passion for sports from a young age and decided to try skeleton in 2005. In 2006, he became a full member of the national team. He made his World Cup debut that year, finishing 11th in Igls.
Rise to Prominence
Under the guidance of coaches Mario Guggenberger and Martin Rettl, Guggenberger finished fourth at the 2007 World Junior Championships and sixth at the European Championships. Beginning in the 2007/08 season, he consistently placed among the top ten in World Cup races.
National Champion and Olympian
A fter winning the national championship in 2009, Guggenberger became the leader of the Austrian men's skeleton team. He earned the opportunity to represent his country at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, where he finished eighth. He went on to win the Austrian championship three consecutive times from 2009 to 2011.
Sochi Olympics and Legacy
Guggenberger competed at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, finishing 14th. He remains an active member of the Austrian skeleton team and continues to compete at the international level.
