Early Life and Education

Matvey Geyser was born in Bershad, Ukraine, to a Jewish schoolteacher. During World War II, his family was interned in the Bershad ghetto, where his father and other relatives perished. After the liberation of the ghetto, he lived in Belgorod-Dnestrovsky and completed a degree in mathematics from the Beltsy Pedagogical Institute.

Career as an Educator

Geyser taught mathematics and later became the director of Pedagogical College No. 13 in Moscow. He defended his doctoral dissertation on Russian-Jewish literature in the 20th century in 2001.

Literary and Journalistic Career

Since 2004, Geyser has collaborated with the Young Guard publishing house, writing biographies of Jewish figures in Russian culture. His published works include "Solomon Mikhoels," "Marshak," "Leonid Utesov," and "Faina Ranevskaya."

Books and Publications

Geyser has authored several books on topics related to Jewish culture and history, including "Seven Candles" (1999), "Journey to the Land of the Shoah" (2004), and "Lamentations of Jeremiah" (2009). He has also published numerous essays, articles, and studies in both Russian and international publications.

Film Collaboration

Geyser worked with director Efim Goltsman to create the documentary "Actors of the Murdered Theater" (2008), a film about the Moscow State Jewish Theater.

Recognition and Honors

In 1991, Geyser was awarded the title of Honored Teacher of the Russian Federation. He is a doctor of philological sciences (2001).
