Matz Sels: A Belgian Goalkeeping Prodigy
Belgian footballer Matz Sels is a goalkeeper currently playing on loan for Anderlecht from his parent club Newcastle United. Sels began his career with the youth academy of Lierse, and was included in the first-team squad in 2010.
Professional Debut with Lierse
Matz Sels made his professional debut for Lierse on July 29, 2012, in a match against Gent. In his debut performance, Sels made a spectacular save on a penalty kick.
Success at Gent
In early 2014, Sels transferred to Gent. He made his debut for the club on January 18 against Kortrijk. During his time at Gent, Sels played a pivotal role in the team's historic 2014/2015 championship win and Super Cup victory. That season, he was recognized as the league's best goalkeeper.
Move to Newcastle United
In the summer of 2016, Sels signed a five-year deal with English club Newcastle United. He made his Championship debut on August 5 in a match against Fulham.
Return to Belgium with Anderlecht
To gain more playing time, Sels returned to his home country in the summer of 2022, joining Anderlecht on loan. He made his debut for the club on July 28 against Antwerp.
International Career
In 2013, Matz Sels represented Belgium at the Toulon Tournament as part of the nation's U20 team.
