Mario Emilio Heriberto Boyé Auterio, an Argentine footballer and striker, was born on July 30, 1922, in Buenos Aires. He began his football journey in the youth team of Brisas del Plata, where he caught the attention of scouts from Boca Juniors. In 1936, Boyé joined Boca Juniors and showcased his powerful physique and speed, compensating for any technical shortcomings he had with the ball.
After playing 5 years in Boca Juniors' youth team, Boyé was finally included in the main squad. He made his debut on June 8, 1941, against Independiente, where Boca Juniors emerged victorious with a score of 2-1. Boyé spent 9 years in Boca Juniors, winning 2 Argentine championships. Initially, he faced harsh criticism from Boca Juniors' supporters who referred to him as "The Tree" and "The Wardrobe" due to his weight of around 80 kilograms. However, his goal-scoring prowess eventually won over the fans, and Boyé gradually became an idol for the Bombonera faithful, earning the nickname El Atómico (The Atomic).
In 1949, Boyé was sold to Italian club Genoa. Although he spent only one season in Italy, he quickly endeared himself to the demanding Genoa fans, who bestowed upon him the nickname El Matador (The Matador) after he scored 4 goals against Triestina in a 5-2 victory. In 1950, after a brief stint in Colombia, Boyé returned to Argentina to play for Racing Club in Avellaneda. Boyé enjoyed 4 successful seasons at Racing Club, scoring goals in every third match, and his team became Argentine champions twice.
After leaving Racing Club, Boyé played for Huracán before returning to Boca Juniors. However, at the age of 33, he was no longer able to display his former playing class, prompting Boyé to retire from football. In total, Boyé played 228 matches for Boca Juniors and scored 124 goals. He made his debut for the Argentine national team on January 31, 1945, in a match against Ecuador in the South American Championship. Boyé represented Argentina in 17 matches and scored 7 goals.
Mario Boyé passed away on July 21, 1992, just 9 days before his 70th birthday.
