Early Life and Background
Maxi Wander was born in Vienna, Austria, in August 1938, to Alois and Käthe Brunner. The family lived in the working-class Hernals district, and despite the ban on the Communist Party following the Anschluss of Austria, Wander was raised with communist values.
Career Beginnings
After leaving school without formal training, Wander worked as a secretary, photographer, journalist, and screenwriter. She married Fred Wander, a fellow communist writer, in 1958. The couple had three children: Daniel, Berti (adopted), and Kitty. They lived in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from 1958 until Wander's death in 1977.
Literary Breakthrough: "Good Morning, Beautiful"
Wander's most famous work, "Good Morning, Beautiful: Recordings from a Tape Recorder," was published in 1977. The book features interviews with 19 women from various backgrounds and ages, who share their experiences and perspectives on happiness. The book, with a foreword by Christa Wolf, was a critical and commercial success, selling 60,000 copies in the GDR and West Germany.
Illness and Legacy
In 1976, Wander was diagnosed with cancer and passed away a year later. In the early 1980s, Fred Wander published her posthumous diary entries in two volumes: "Life Would be a Great Alternative" and "One Life is Not Enough." Wander's work continues to be remembered for its feminist themes, exploration of identity, and depiction of the lives of ordinary people.
