Biography of Maxim Bakiyev
Early Life and EducationMaxim Kurmanbekovich Bakiyev was born in 1977 in the family of Kurmanbek Bakiyev, the former president of Kyrgyzstan. He grew up alongside his older brother Marat. Bakiyev completed his secondary education in the Kyrgyz village of Kazarman and later studied at the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University, graduating with honors in 1999. During his time at university, he also attended courses in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Early Career and Business Ventures
While still studying, Bakiyev started working at the international law firm "Interpravo." According to media reports, he served as a member of the advisory board of the British holding company BCB Solution Limited, providing consultancy support for developing countries and developing the consulting business in the Middle East. In 2005, during the parliamentary elections in Kyrgyzstan, Bakiyev's father was elected president, and the country experienced a change of leadership known as the "Tulip Revolution." Following his father's election, Bakiyev became involved in various business projects, particularly in the mining, banking, oil, gas, and real estate sectors.
Role in Kyrgyz Politics
In 2009, Bakiyev was appointed the head of the newly established Central Agency for Development, Investments, and Innovations (CARII). There were speculations that his appointment indicated his father's intention to groom him as his successor. In 2010, the country witnessed political unrest and protests, leading to the ousting of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. Maxim Bakiyev became a target of criminal charges and was put on the Interpol's international wanted list for fraud. He fled to Latvia, where he was a member of the board of directors of the Maval Aktivi holding company.
Legal Troubles and Controversies
Several criminal cases were brought against Maxim Bakiyev, including allegations of illegal privatization of state-owned enterprises. There were also accusations of misusing state credit funds for personal gain. In 2010, he was arrested in the UK based on an international arrest warrant issued by Interpol. Bakiyev faced a range of charges, including fraud and organized mass murder. He was also implicated in various business schemes and controversies related to his involvement in the Altyn jewelry holding company and the MGN Group.
Personal Life
Maxim Bakiyev is married to Ayzhan Kenenbaeva, the daughter of a former mayor of Bishkek. They have a daughter together. Bakiyev is known for his interest in mysticism and his friendships with rock musicians. He has been involved in sports, particularly as the head of the Kyrgyz Federation of Wrestling.
