Maxym Kryvonos was a renowned Cossack leader and military commander who played a pivotal role in the Khmelnytsky uprising, a period of intense conflict in 17th-century Ukraine.

Origins and Affiliation

Little is known about Kryvonos's origins. Emigrant scholars such as Vyacheslav Lypynsky and Natalia Polonska-Vasylenko asserted that he was of Scottish descent. According to the "Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Studies," he may have been a townsman from Ostroh or Mohyliv. Ukrainian historians, citing his nickname "Ol'shansky," suggest that he came from the village of Ol'shana in present-day Cherkasy Oblast.

Military Exploits

Kryvonos led a formidable uprising of Ukrainian peasants, Cossacks, and urban poor that spanned Braclavshchyna, Podolia, and Volhynia. His forces successfully liberated significant territories from Polish control, freeing the Left Bank and a substantial portion of the Right Bank Ukraine.

Kryvonos demonstrated exceptional military strategy. During the Battle of Korsun in 1648, his ambushing force proved pivotal in defeating the Polish army. His detachments also triumphed in battles at Pilavtsy, Makhnivka, and Kostyantyn, and seized the fortress of Vysokyi Zamok near Lviv.

Allegations of Violence

Some historians have condemned Kryvonos and his Cossacks for acts of violence and brutality. However, a noteworthy letter from Kryvonos to a nobleman pleading for the safety of his estate suggests that his actions may not have been entirely indiscriminate.

Death and Legacy

Kryvonos's demise occurred during the siege of Zamostia fortress. The cause of his death remains uncertain. According to the prevailing theory, he succumbed to an epidemic, possibly the plague. Alternatively, he may have died from wounds sustained in battle.
