Biography of Maurizio Marchetto
Maurizio Marchetto is an Italian speed skater and coach who competed at the highest level in speed skating from 1976 to 1984. He participated in three Olympic Games (1976, 1980, 1984) and represented Italy in six European Championships and five World Championships in classical all-round events.
Olympic Career
During the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Marchetto achieved 21st place in the 5000m event and 17th place in the 10000m event. In the 1980 Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid, he finished 28th in the 1500m event, 23rd in the 5000m event, and 22nd in the 10000m event. In the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Marchetto secured 22nd place in the 5000m event and 20th place in the 10000m event.
European and World Championships
Marchetto's best result in the European Championships was 21st place in 1980. In the World Championships, he achieved 24th place in 1977.
Coaching Career
After retiring from professional skating, Marchetto became a coach for the Italian speed skating team. He had notable success with Roberto Sighel, who became the World Champion in 1992, and Enrico Fabris, who won two Olympic gold medals in 2006 in Turin. In addition to the Italian team, Marchetto also trained Ivan Skobrev (a two-time medalist) and Alexis Contin for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Coaching the Russian Women's Team
Following the Olympics in Vancouver, Marchetto took on the role of coaching the Russian women's speed skating team.
