Early Life and Education
Born on March 30, 1919, in Massachusetts, McGeorge Bundy came from a prominent family. His mother hailed from two influential families, while his father was a diplomat involved in the Marshall Plan. Bundy received his education at Dexter School and Yale University, where he joined the renowned secret society "Skull and Bones."
Involvement in the Marshall Plan
In 1949, Bundy joined the staff of the Marshall Plan, working alongside notable figures such as Dwight Eisenhower, Allen Dulles, and George Kennan. He played a key role in implementing the plan, which provided American aid to Europe after World War II.
Advisor to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson
Bundy became a close advisor to President Kennedy, holding various positions of influence. He was considered a "wise man" and later appointed as the youngest-ever Dean of Harvard University. In 1961, he joined Kennedy's National Security Council, where he had a decisive role in shaping foreign policy and defense decisions. Under President Johnson, Bundy continued his influential role until 1964.
Chairman of the 303 Committee
In 1964, Bundy was appointed Chairman of the 303 Committee, a secretive organization responsible for coordinating covert government operations. He remained in this position until 1966.
President of the Ford Foundation
In 1966, Bundy left government service to become the President of the Ford Foundation. He held this position until 1979, where he oversaw a range of charitable and educational initiatives.
Later Career
After leaving the Ford Foundation, Bundy served as a professor of history at New York University from 1979 to 1989. He also held a position at the Carnegie Corporation from 1990 to 1996 until his death on September 16, 1996.
