Early Life and Education
Mélanie Joly was born in 1979 in the Ahuntsic neighborhood of Montreal. Her father, Clément Joly, was an accountant and a high-ranking member of the Liberal Party of Quebec. Joly earned a bachelor's degree in law from the University of Montreal in 2001 and a master's degree in comparative and public law from Oxford University in 2003.
Legal Career
Before entering politics, Joly worked as a lawyer at two prominent Montreal law firms, specializing in civil and commercial litigation.
Political Career
Municipal PoliticsIn 2013, Joly founded the Vrai changement pour Montréal party and ran for mayor of Montreal. She came in second place, with 26.50% of the vote.
Federal Politics
In 2015, Joly joined the Liberal Party of Canada and successfully ran for a seat in the House of Commons in the riding of Ahuntsic-Cartierville. She was appointed Minister of Canadian Heritage in the same year.
Cabinet Positions
Over the next several years, Joly held various cabinet positions, including:
- Minister of Tourism, Official Languages, and La Francophonie (2018-2019)
- Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages (2019-2021)
