Childhood and Education
Nicolae Costin was born on April 7, 1936, in the village of Preciştea. He completed his primary education in his hometown and went on to study at the Pedagogical School in Orhei (1952-1956). He then enrolled in the Faculty of History at the State University of Moldova (1960-1965).
Academic Career
After graduating from university, Costin worked as a teacher in his home village (1958-1960). He later taught at the Faculty of Political Science at the "Alecu Russo" Pedagogical University in Bălți (1965-1974). Concurrently, he pursued a doctorate in Political Science at the Moscow State University имени М. В. Ломоносова (1970-1973). He then became an associate professor at the Department of Scientific Communism at the State University of Chișinău (1974-1990).
Political Activism
In 1989, Costin joined the national liberation movement and became one of the founders of the People's Front of Moldova. He was elected Chairman of the Chișinău City Assembly and a member of the first democratic parliament of the Republic of Moldova (1990-1994). In 1990, he became the General Mayor of the Municipality of Chișinău.
Mayorship of Chișinău
As mayor of Chișinău, Costin played a significant role in the city's political and economic development. He is credited with promoting national values and enhancing the city's infrastructure.
Dismissal and Death
On August 9, 1994, Costin was dismissed from his post as mayor by a decree of President Mircea Snegur. He entered the reserve cadre of the Government of Moldova. On February 16, 1995, he passed away from a stroke caused by leukemia. His death remains shrouded in mystery as his driver also died from leukemia around the same time.
Legacy
Nicolae Costin's legacy as a politician and educator is honored in Moldova and Romania. A street in Chișinău and a street in Iaşi, Romania, are named after him. The memory of Nicolae Costin is commemorated annually in Chișinău.
