Melchior Inchofer

Melchior Inchofer was a Hungarian Jesuit scholar who made significant contributions to various fields of knowledge.

Early Life and Religious Career

Born in Hungary, Inchofer joined the Jesuit order in 1607. He excelled as a professor of philosophy, mathematics, and theology in Messina, Italy. Later, he became a member of the Roman congregation de propaganda fide.

Scientific Endeavors

Throughout his career, Inchofer published numerous scientific works. His most notable contributions included:

- "Annales Ecclesiastici Regni Hungariae" (Vol. I, 1644): A comprehensive history of the Hungarian Church.

- "Historia (sacrae) latinitatis libri IV" (Milan, 1638): A treatise on the history of Latin in religious contexts.

Alleged Authorship and Controversy

Inchofer was initially suspected of being the author of the satirical work "Monarchia Solipsorum" (Venice, 1645). However, an investigation by Pope Innocent X cleared Inchofer of this accusation. The true author was later identified as the ex-Jesuit Giulio Clemente Conte Scotti.
