Early Life and Education

Mervyn King was born on 30 March 1948, in Chesham Bois, Buckinghamshire. He attended Wolverhampton Grammar School and King's College, Cambridge, where he earned an MA degree in economics in 1969. He also studied at St John's College, Cambridge, and Harvard University.

Academic Career

After graduating from Cambridge, King worked as a research fellow on the 'Cambridge Growth Project' with Nobel laureate Richard Stone and Terry Barker. He later taught at the University of Birmingham and served as a visiting professor at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1984, he became a professor of economics at the London School of Economics, where he founded the Financial Markets Research Group.

Involvement in Economic Policy

In 1981, King was one of 364 economists who signed the notorious 'Letter to The Times,' criticizing Geoffrey Howe's 1981 budget. In 1991, he joined the Bank of England, becoming its Chief Economist and Executive Director. In 1998, he was appointed Deputy Governor of the Bank and became a member of the prestigious 'Group of Thirty' (G30).

Governorship of the Bank of England

From 2003 to 2013, King served as Governor of the Bank of England. During his tenure, he oversaw the bank's response to the 2008 financial crisis. He also became a member of the Monetary Policy Committee and a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE).

Honors and Affiliations

King is a Fellow of the British Academy, an Honorary Fellow of King's College, Cambridge, and St John's College, Cambridge. He holds honorary degrees from several universities and is a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also a Patron of the Worcestershire County Cricket Club and a Trustee of the National Gallery.

Personal Life

King is married to Barbara Melander, a Finnish interior designer. He is an avid supporter of Aston Villa Football Club and advocates for the promotion of cricket through the Cricket Foundation's 'Chance to Shine' program.
