Early Life and Education

Agaphangel (Alexei Alekseevich Preobrazhensky) was born in the village of Mochily, Tulskaya Governorate, into a priestly family. He graduated from the Tula Theological Seminary and the Moscow Theological Academy in 1881 with a degree in theology. His dissertation, titled "The Hexaemeron of John, Exarch of Bulgaria," demonstrated his philological erudition.

Ecclesiastical Career

Assistant and Inspector

In 1881, Agaphangel was appointed teacher at the Ranenburg Theological School and later became assistant superintendent of the Skopinsky Theological School, where he taught religious studies.

Monasticism and Episcopal Consecration

After the tragic death of his wife and newborn child, Agaphangel was ordained a monk in 1885. He was consecrated as a hieromonk and subsequently elevated to the rank of igumen and appointed inspector of the Tomsk Theological Seminary in 1886. Two years later, he became rector of the Irkutsk Theological Seminary and was elevated to the rank of archimandrite. In 1889, he was consecrated as Bishop of Kirensk, vicar of the Irkutsk Diocese.

Episcopal Ministry in Siberia and the Baltics

From 1893 to 1897, Agaphangel served as Bishop of Tobolsk and Siberia, conducting missionary work in remote areas of his diocese. In 1897, he was transferred to the Diocese of Riga and Mitau in the Baltics.

As Bishop of Riga, Agaphangel oversaw the construction and renovation of numerous churches. In 1905, he convened an eparchial council to propose reforms in church life, including granting laity a role in electing clergy and streamlining liturgical practices in Latvian and Estonian churches.

Support for Revolution Victims

In 1906, Agaphangel urged his clergy to intercede on behalf of those involved in revolutionary activities, arguing for leniency and pardon.

Archbishop of Lithuania and Vilnius

In 1910, Agaphangel became Archbishop of Lithuania and Vilnius. He was awarded the Diamond Cross for his services in 1912.

Political Views and Transfer to Yaroslavl

As a moderate monarchist, Agaphangel refused to sanction a procession commemorating the 50th anniversary of Mikhail Muravyov's administration in Western Russia, which angered the far-right. This incident led to his transfer to Yaroslavl, replacing Archbishop Tikhon (Belavin).

Sainthood and Legacy

Bishop Agaphangel was glorified as a saint in August 2000. His feast day is celebrated on October 3 according to the Julian calendar. He is remembered for his ecclesiastical reforms, missionary work, and support for those affected by political turmoil.
