Mher Levonovich Shahgeldyan (born September 29, 1967, Yerevan) is a distinguished Armenian political and state figure, currently serving as Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia. Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to the political and scholarly landscapes of Armenia.

Early Life and Education

Shahgeldyan was born in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. He pursued his undergraduate studies in philosophy at Yerevan State University from 1987 to 1992. Subsequently, he continued his academic journey by enrolling in the postgraduate program in political science at Yerevan State University, earning a doctoral degree in 1995. Concurrently, he attended a special course at the American University of Armenia from 1993 to 1994 and studied at the Armenian Center for Management (CEMA) from 1994 to 1996.

Professional Career

Prior to his political endeavors, Shahgeldyan gained practical experience as a tester at the Yerevan Electric Lamp Factory from 1984 to 1985. He also served in the Soviet Army from 1985 to 1987. After completing his military service, he commenced his scholarly career, working as a lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Yerevan State University in 1993. Subsequently, he was appointed as a researcher in the Department of Social Sciences at the Research Institute of Pedagogical Sciences from 1993 to 1995.

Political Engagements

Shahgeldyan actively engaged in politics in the mid-1990s. From 1995 to 1998, he served as a commentator in the Department of Public and Political Programs of the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company. Concurrently, he held the position of Director of the Horizon Center for Legal and Political Strategic Studies from 1996 to 1998. His political involvement continued as Chief Editor of the Foreign Broadcasting Department of the National Radio of Armenia from 1998 to 2000.

Shahgeldyan was elected as a member of the Armenian Parliament in 2002, representing the Orinats Yerkir parliamentary faction. He served as a member of the Standing Committee on Defense, National Security, and Internal Affairs from 2003 to 2007, assuming the role of Deputy Chairman of the Orinats Yerkir party during the same period.

Ministerial Roles

In 2007, Shahgeldyan was entrusted with the responsibility of Minister of Emergency Situations of Armenia. His leadership in this capacity was marked by significant reforms and advancements in the country's emergency response systems. In April 2008, he was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia, a position he has held to date.

Authorship and Recognition

Alongside his political career, Shahgeldyan has authored over 40 scholarly publications, contributing to the discourse on political theory and public administration. His expertise has earned him numerous awards and accolades, including the Honored Worker of the Republic of Armenia, the Prime Minister's Medal of Honor, and the Mkhitar Gosh Medal.
