Early Life and Education
Michael Carter, a renowned British actor, was born on June 29, 1947, in Dumfries, Scotland. Initially drawn to sports, particularly football, Carter's life took a pivotal turn when he watched the Soviet film "Hamlet." Inspired by the performance, he resolved to become an actor. After graduating high school, he enrolled in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, earning a degree in 1969.
Career Beginnings
Carter's television debut came in the popular British sci-fi series "Doctor Who," and he transitioned to film in 1981 with the horror-comedy "An American Werewolf in London." His theatrical career flourished, and he toured the UK with a theater company.
Breakthrough Roles
In 1983, Carter portrayed the enigmatic Radhu Molassar in Michael Mann's horror film "The Keep." His height was perfectly suited for the character designed by French comic book artist Enki Bilal. However, it was his portrayal of Bib Fortuna, Jabba the Hutt's majordomo in "Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi," that cemented his status as a cult figure. The character's grotesque appearance and distinctive orange eyes overshadowed Carter's performance.
Post-"Star Wars" Career
After "Star Wars," Carter appeared in the television series "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" and found success in theater, performing in London's West End, on Broadway, and in Japan and Switzerland. His filmography includes "The Illusionist," "Centurion," and "Young Adam."
Personal Life
Carter married Julianne Stonor, despite their nine-year age difference. Their marriage brought him two sons and two daughters, but the strain of his demanding shooting schedule led to divorce. Since then, Carter has remained single and guarded about his personal life.
Recent Work
In 2022, Carter portrayed Jaehaerys Targaryen in the HBO series "House of the Dragon." Despite his advanced age, he continues to work in film and television while penning screenplays and penning a novel in the fantasy genre.
