Former English footballer, now football managerMichael Colin Newell, also known as Colin Newell, is a former English footballer who is currently working as a football manager. He was a member of the 'Blackburn Rovers' team that won the Premier League in 1995. Throughout his career, he earned over three and a half million pounds from transfers. On October 18, 2009, Newell left his position as manager of the League Two team 'Grimsby Town', which he held for a year.
Playing Career
Newell began his playing career at clubs such as 'Liverpool' and 'Crewe Alexandra' before joining 'Wigan Athletic'. After spending some time there, he moved to Luton Town. In 1987, he made a successful move to Leicester, where he quickly established himself as an excellent striker. However, he did not succeed in getting promoted to the First Division and eventually signed a contract with 'Everton' for £1.1 million in 1989.
Although Newell did not achieve the same level of fame as his fellow striker Gary Lineker, he formed a formidable trio with Graham Sharp and Tony Cottee. Together, they helped the team rise to the top of the league table but eventually dropped to sixth place.
Record-Breaking Achievements
In the 1995-1996 season, during a match between 'Blackburn Rovers' and 'Rosenborg' in the UEFA Champions League, Newell achieved the fastest hat-trick in the history of the league. He scored three goals in just nine minutes using his right foot, left foot, and head. This hat-trick was considered "perfect" due to the variety of goals scored.
Managerial Career
After retiring as a player in May 2001, Newell transitioned into a managerial role. He first worked at 'Hartlepool United' during the 2002-2003 season and then moved to 'Luton Town' in the summer of 2003. He stayed there for a long time but left in 2007 due to deteriorating relationships with the club's management, primarily because of his regular criticism.
Newell then joined 'Grimsby Town', where he worked until the end of October 2009. During his managerial career, he managed a total of thirteen different clubs and experienced both successes and failures.
