Michael Sleggs, British Actor from 'This Country,' Dies at 33

Michael Sleggs, a British actor best known for his role in the critically and commercially successful BBC series "This Country," has passed away at the age of 33 due to a long-fought illness.

The Announcement

Sleggs' death was announced by his friend and fellow actor Camilla Alicia-Bates. Shortly before his passing, Sleggs had posted on Facebook that he was receiving palliative care for heart failure.

'This Country' and the Role of 'Slugs'

Sleggs, a longtime friend of "This Country" stars Charlie Cooper and Daisy May Cooper, played Michael "Slugs" Slugett in the series. Slugs was the bothersome neighbor of siblings Kurtan and Kerry, played by Cooper and Cooper, respectively. In a twist that mirrored Sleggs' own health struggles, Slugs' character suffered from terminal cancer.

Health Challenges and Heartbreak

In May, Sleggs shared on social media that doctors had given him limited time left. "Hey guys," he wrote. "[...] You will have probably noticed I've been in hospital a lot the last few months. [...] It's been decided that my treatment won't be working anymore, so I've been sent home with palliative care support."

Sleggs had previously suffered heart failure in March but had made what he described in an earlier Facebook post as a "miraculous" recovery.

Tributes and Legacy

"This Country" writer Simon Mayhew-Archer tweeted that Sleggs had been "the heart and soul of the show." He added, "He was a fantastic, talented man who brought joy to everyone who knew and worked with him. I loved working with him. I will miss him."

"This Country" is a comedy-drama that follows the lives of cousins Kurtan and Kerry living in a quiet Cotswolds village. It premiered on BBC Three in 2017, with a second season airing in 2018 and a third season planned for 2019. Michael "Slugs" Slugett was Sleggs' only major acting role.
