Biography of Michael Stackpole
Michael Stackpole is an American writer who specializes in the genres of fantasy and science fiction. He was born in Wausau, Wisconsin and grew up in Vermont. Stackpole obtained his bachelor's degree in history from the University of Vermont. In the late 1970s, Stackpole began developing role-playing games for various companies and wrote numerous journal articles, primarily published in niche publications. One of his notable works includes an analysis of the influence of computer games on aggression. Stackpole conducted extensive research on cases linking physical harm or even murders to computer games and showed that the connections were weak at best. In fact, he found that even with these cases, avid gamers had levels of aggression significantly below the average.
Writing Career and Contributions
In the 1980s, Stackpole started developing computer games for Coleco and Interplay Productions. Among his projects for Interplay, he worked on games such as 'Bard's Tale III,' 'Wasteland,' 'Star Trek: 25th Anniversary,' and 'Star Trek: Judgment Rites.' Stackpole also created a role-playing game called 'Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes,' which later served as the basis for 'Wasteland' and the legendary 'Fallout' series.
Stackpole began writing books in 1986, with his first novel, 'Talion: Revenant,' completed that year. However, the book was not published until 1997, as editors felt it was too lengthy and lacked an engaging plot for an unknown author at that time. Stackpole achieved significant success with serialized projects, where he excelled in developing storylines initiated by other writers.
In 1987, Stackpole started writing books set in the 'Battletech' universe, becoming one of the most popular authors in the genre. Some of his works in this series were adapted into an animated television series. He was later invited to work on books set in the 'Star Wars' universe and even wrote scripts for several comic books based on the franchise. However, Stackpole did not limit himself to developing other people's masterpieces; he continued to create his own worlds. Occasionally, he created his own series, such as the 'DragonCrown War Cycle,' which attracted attention due to his unconventional approach, including the use of firearms in a fantasy setting. While not all readers appreciated these experiments, Stackpole amassed a dedicated fan base.
In 1995, Stackpole wrote one of the four stories included in Roger Zelazny's anthology, 'Forever After.' In 1998, he participated in the creation of the anthology 'Lord of the Fantastic' as a tribute to Zelazny.
Stackpole recently completed one of his latest series, 'The Age of Discovery,' with the final volume, 'A New World,' published in mid-2007. In November 2010, his first book in a new trilogy titled 'At The Queen's Command' was released, which was part of 'The Crown Colonies' series.
