In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Lukyanenko worked as an independent journalist, editing the "samizdat" newspaper "Tsentralna Rada." During this period, he began writing fiction. His first published short story, "Ya, moi chert i..." ("Me, My Devil, and..."), appeared in 1991.
