Early Life and Education
Michal Cotler-Wunsh was born on December 18, 1970, in Jerusalem, Israel. Her mother, Ariella Ze'evi, was a secretary for the Gahal faction and later the Likud party during the premiership of Menachem Begin. Raised without a father, Cotler-Wunsh moved to Montreal at the age of eight with her mother after she married Canadian Irwin Cotler. After graduating high school, she returned to Israel to attend the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Military Service and Legal Career
Cotler-Wunsh served in the Israel Defense Forces and was discharged in 1991. In 1996, she obtained her bachelor's degree from the Hebrew University's law school. She worked in the Ministry of Justice as a legal adviser and legislative drafter, coordinating the ministry's committee on civil code led by Justice Aharon Barak. Cotler-Wunsh also practiced law in the private sector. From 2002 to 2006, she pursued a master's degree in law at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
Academic Pursuits and Political Involvement
In 2010, Cotler-Wunsh returned to Israel and began working at Tel Aviv University. From 2012 to 2013, she lectured at the Hebrew University School of Law in their community service program. In 2013, she became the director of international relations at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya. From 2016 to 2020, Cotler-Wunsh pursued a doctorate in law at the Hebrew University.
In 2020, she was elected to the Knesset as a member of the Blue and White party. She currently serves as the Chair of the Committee on Drug and Alcohol Abuse and is a member of several other committees, including the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee, the Law Committee, and the Committee on the Rights of the Child.
Personal Life
Michal Cotler-Wunsh is married and has four children. She has been outspoken in her criticism of Twitter for allowing Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to engage in anti-Semitic propaganda. In late December 2020, she announced her decision to leave Blue and White.
