Biography of Mieczysław Romanowski
Early Life and EducationMieczysław Romanowski was born to a Polonized German father and a French mother. He graduated from the General Staff Academy in Saint Petersburg and became a member of a secret circle of Polish officers led by Zygmunt Sierakowski.
Polish Insurrection
In 1862, Romanowski returned to Poland and played a significant role in the January Uprising. He served as the military commander of the Lublin and Siedlce Voivodeships. Despite suffering a defeat at Kaniow in July 1863, he achieved victories at Chruślin and Żyrczyn, earning him the rank of general.
However, Romanowski faced another setback at Fajsławice in August and retreated to the south. He was defeated at Poryck in November and Kock in December.
Exile and Later Years
After the uprising, Romanowski went into exile in France and England. He participated in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. In 1872, he settled in Lviv, where he lived until his death. He is buried at the Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv.
