Early Life and Education
Ján Francisci-Rimavský, a prominent Slovak philologist, Lutheran priest, writer, and poet, was born into a peasant family in the Turčian village of Rakša. In 1834, he graduated from the Lutheran lyceum in Bratislava.
Religious Studies and Ordination
Francisci-Rimavský actively participated in the "Society for the Czechoslovak Language and Literature." In 1837, he completed his theological studies in Vienna and became a Lutheran priest in Liptovský Mikuláš.
Journalism and Linguistic Contributions
During his time in Liptovský Mikuláš, Francisci-Rimavský published journals in the Slovak language. His literary works showcased his dedication to the Slovak language and culture.
Codification of Slovak
In 1843, Francisci-Rimavský played a pivotal role in the codification of the Štúr variant of the Slovak language at a meeting in Hlboké with Ľudovít Štúr and Jozef Hurban.
Foundation of Slovak Matica
From 1863 to 1867, Francisci-Rimavský was instrumental in the establishment of Matica slovenská, a prominent Slovak cultural institution. His contributions to Slovak philology, literature, and national identity left a lasting legacy.
