Biography of Michel Hidalgo
Michel Hidalgo was a French football player and coach, who was born on March 22, 1933, in Leffrinckoucke, France. He started his professional playing career in 1952 with the club "Le Havre." In 1954, he transferred to "Reims" and became the champion of France in 1955. Hidalgo also played in the final match of the European Cup in 1956, scoring a goal against Real Madrid. In 1957, he joined "Monaco" and won two French championships and two French Cups with the team. Hidalgo remained with "Monaco" until he retired from playing in 1966. He played one game for the French national team in 1962.
Coaching Career
On March 27, 1976, Michel Hidalgo was appointed as the coach of the French national team. He led the team to a 4th place finish in the 1982 World Cup and a victory in the 1984 European Championship. After the European Championship win, Hidalgo stepped down as the coach and became the technical director of the national team. In 1986, he became the head coach of Marseille's "Olympique," leading the team to three French championships and one French Cup victory. Hidalgo retired from coaching in 1991 to focus on his own football show on Monaco TV. However, he returned to coaching in 2004, leading the Congolese national team until 2006.
Achievements
As a player, Hidalgo won the French championship in 1955, 1961, and 1963. He also won the French Cup in 1960 and 1963, and was a finalist in the European Cup in 1956. As a coach, Hidalgo led the French national team to victory in the 1984 European Championship. He also won three French championships and one French Cup with Marseille's "Olympique" in 1989, 1990, and 1991, respectively.
